CHANGING DEMENTIA CARE

Simon is a digital platform for caregivers and people living with dementia. Inspired by personal experiences, Simon allows caregivers to monitor the well-being of their loved ones via geo tracking and calendar functions, while providing a grounding place for people who have dementia. But beyond simple care management,  Simon takes the next step by deploying nudge technology, via location-based push notifications, to guide people with dementia towards more autonomy.

At its most basic, Simon is an interactive calendar and map available to a group of people, in order to manage the care of one person. But the opportunity goes far beyond that. At present, there is little understanding of the behavioral aspect of cognitive decline. With our technology, we can track this decline daily and learn the needs of our users as the disease progresses. This is invaluable not only in day to day and long term care, but in pharmaceutical and academic research. Through this data we can change the understanding for dementia care and its progression.

The aging global population is the largest generation of adults to ever age into retirement. They bring with them decades of digital literacy, and a strong sense of independence. People with dementia are living longer lives, and there are more and more diagnoses every year. Care is expensive and labor intensive. Simon acts as a force multiplier in dementia care for caregivers and for individuals diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and other dementias.

We also see applications for Simon beyond dementia. This type of nudge technology can be applied to a large swath of the population. Over 25% of seniors will suffer from mild cognitive impairment. Around one quarter of the United States suffer from cognitive impairments of some sort, from developmental diseases to learning disabilities. Nudge technology and an interactive care management platform can increase autonomy while decreasing pain and stress for both patients and caretakers.

INSPIRED BY PERSONAL EXPERIENCES

In 2018, our co-founder Dan Brown learned that his mother-in-law Frederique was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. In the years that followed, Dan spent a lot of time helping with her care, as well as supporting his wife in her care. On one particular outing to the market, Frederique forgot to bring cash to pay for goods, then forgot her ATM pin when they went to get more cash, and then forgot her code to enter her apartment when they finally returned.

Dan’s curiosity about supporting people like Frederique and their caregivers through technology lead to Simon. Knowing that our phones already track our most frequented locations, our schedules, and even the length of our stride, Simon pulls these familiar tools together in a place specifically for those with cognitive impairment, supplementing the real intelligence lost to pathology.
